Rep Joseph Bellino
Bellino: Many accomplishments over past two years, including signage of plan to combat opioid prescription fraud
RELEASE|October 29, 2020

Serving the families of Wayne and Monroe counties is a position I am honored to have and a role I take very seriously. For the past two years, I’ve been fighting to improve the lives of people  in our community and throughout all of Michigan.

One of the key highlights I personally fought for this term was to protect our children and adults alike by combating opioid prescription fraud, a crisis with devastating consequences that has been destroying lives for far too long.

In July, my legislation to cut down on fraudulent prescriptions and combat Michigan’s growing opioid abuse problem was signed into law. The plan calls on doctors to send all prescriptions through a secure computer system, preventing anyone but the doctor from issuing prescriptions.

As an addict in recovery myself, this is an issue I am extremely passionate about. As I’ve mentioned time and time again, the drug crisis continues to claim the lives of users across Michigan. If we want to see progress, we must hold doctors and bad actors accountable.

This is a chance to reduce the heartbreaking number of overdose deaths and overdoses that result from fraudulent prescriptions in our communities. Since my first day in office, I have been committed to addressing this crisis, and I’m thankful that my colleagues in the Legislature as well as the governor support this important step in reforming the system.

Along with fighting the opioid crisis,  my colleagues and I have been hard at work addressing the COVID-19 crisis.  Just this month, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle were at the Capitol for a late-night session, working to improve our state’s response and get us through the remainder of the COVID-19 pandemic safely.

When the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the governor’s COVID-19 executive orders were unconstitutional, it became clear to everyone that there was a great need for immediate collaboration between Democrats, Republicans, the House, Senate, and governor. And it turns out, this cooperation was what was needed all along, just like I’ve been advocating for since March.

It’s been a busy two years, and I want to thank each and every one of you for your continued support and feedback. I know the past year especially has brought with it many difficulties, and I’m confident we will overcome this pandemic and come out even stronger on the other side.
