State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz was recognized this week by mParks with its Advocacy and Leadership in Government Award. The award honors state and local leaders who champion parks and recreation through public service.
Recipients are recognized for advancing policies that protect funding, expand public access, and elevate the importance of parks and recreation across Michigan. Schmaltz, who was nominated for the award by Jackson County Parks and Recreation Director Kyle Lewis, was one of four leaders statewide selected for the distinction.
“Parks and trails are great investments that make our communities strong, improving quality of life, serving as gathering places for families, and providing opportunities for healthy living activities,” Schmaltz said. “I am honored to be recognized by mParks, but this award really belongs to the local leaders, volunteers, and residents in Jackson and Washtenaw counties who work every day to make these projects a reality. I will continue fighting to bring resources home so our communities can thrive.”
Schmaltz has been a consistent advocate for funding local parks and recreational trails in Jackson and Washtenaw counties. Through the state budget process and grants from the Natural Resources Trust Fund, she has helped secure funding to establish the new Main Street Park in Chelsea, make improvements to the MLK Jr. Equality Trail in Jackson, support the Cascades restoration project in Jackson, and enhance mountain bike trails at Ella Sharp Park. She has also supported funding for Washtenaw County and the Huron Waterloo Pathways Initiative to further develop the Border-to-Border Trail. mParks recognized her advocacy for these crucial grants when selecting her for the award.
Schmaltz said continued investment in parks and recreation strengthens local economies, supports tourism, and ensures families have safe, accessible places to gather and enjoy the outdoors.
“Quality parks and trails make our communities better places to live and raise a family,” Schmaltz said. “I will keep working to ensure Jackson and Washtenaw counties receive their fair share of resources so residents can enjoy these spaces for generations to come.”
mParks is a statewide professional association representing more than 2,000 park and recreation professionals, agencies, vendors, and advocates committed to building healthy, vibrant communities through recreation, conservation, and public spaces.
