Rep. Allor: Governor late to the table – again.
RELEASE|August 16, 2022

State Rep. Sue Allor, R-Wolverine, today issued the following statement criticizing Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s new call for a sales tax pause after she previously vetoed three bipartisan tax relief plans passed by the Legislature:

“My colleagues and I acted quickly earlier this year, trying to bring much-needed relief to Michiganders as we all face record high inflation, the only hurdle has once again been our governor. Her actions clearly speak louder than her press releases. Although I’m happy some action is being taken, the simple truth is her call to temporarily pause the sales tax is nothing but an election-year stunt, and more could have been done. Essential items such as gas and groceries cost too much for many of our neighbors. Our state’s hard-working families, young people and seniors deserve relief – but they needed it long ago. I am frustrated and appalled by the governor’s lack of empathy while refusing to work in tandem with the Legislature – the people’s representatives.”

  • Senate Bill 768 would have reduced the income tax from 4.25 percent to 3.9 percent while providing a nonrefundable child tax credit of $500 for each qualified dependent. The bill was introduced in December 2021, and gathered bipartisan support through the Legislature, only to be vetoed by the governor.
  • House Bill 5570 would have temporarily suspended the state’s 27-cent-per-gallon gas tax. The bill was introduced in November 2021, and gathered bipartisan support through the Legislature, only to be vetoed by the governor.
  • House Bill 4568, along with a tie-barred Senate bill made up a $2.5 billion tax relief plan that would have returned money to taxpayers by cutting their income tax rate. The bill was introduced in March 2021, and gathered bipartisan support through the Legislature, only to be vetoed by the governor.
